{"id":17761,"date":"2026-05-05T13:32:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T13:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/auba.africa\/?p=17761"},"modified":"2026-05-05T13:33:16","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T13:33:16","slug":"tanzania-prepares-final-submission-for-un-human-rights-periodic-review-upr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/auba.africa\/index.php\/2026\/05\/05\/tanzania-prepares-final-submission-for-un-human-rights-periodic-review-upr\/","title":{"rendered":"Tanzania Prepares Final Submission for UN Human Rights Periodic Review (UPR)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Vumilia Kondo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MOROGORO, Tanzania<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, in collaboration with civil society and legal experts, is finalizing its national report for the 4th cycle of the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process, currently underway in Morogoro, highlights the country\u2019s commitment to transparency and the protection of fundamental freedoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representing the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs, the In-charge State Attorney for Morogoro, Mr. Xevia Masalu, opened the session by emphasizing that the UPR is a vital mechanism for national self-assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He urged all stakeholders to ensure the report is backed by verifiable data that reflects the lived realities of Tanzanians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inclusion of Marginalized Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key highlight of the ongoing consultations is the active participation of the Tanzania Albinism Society (TAS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking during the session, the Chairman of TAS, Mr. Godson Mollel, underscored the importance of the report in addressing the specific challenges faced by persons with albinism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Our involvement ensures that issues of safety, health, and social inclusion for people with albinism are not just footnotes but central to the national human rights agenda,&#8221;<\/em> Mr. Mollel remarked, noting that the UPR process provides a global platform to advocate for the rights of vulnerable groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legal Standards and Accountability<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legal fraternity, represented by the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), also played a pivotal role in the validation process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Advocate Pasience Mlowe, representing TLS, emphasized the need for legal frameworks that align with international human rights standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mlowe noted that the legal profession is committed to ensuring that the report accurately captures the state of access to justice and the rule of law in Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<em>&#8220;As the bar association, our role is to ensure that the recommendations we propose are legally sound and focus on systemic reforms that will benefit all citizens,&#8221;<\/em> the advocate stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Call for Evidence-Based Reporting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Acting Assistant Director for Human Rights, Ms. Hadija Kissa, reiterated that the government\u2019s mandate is to protect and promote human rights through concrete actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;She stressed that the final document must transition from general narratives to measurable successes achieved between 2022 and 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inclusion of diverse voices ranging from state attorneys and human rights defenders to representatives of the legal bar and disability advocates aims to produce a comprehensive report for the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;This collaborative effort signals Tanzania&#8217;s proactive stance in fostering a culture of accountability and human dignity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Vumilia Kondo MOROGORO, Tanzania The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, in collaboration with civil society and legal experts, is finalizing its national report for the 4th cycle of the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
